Starting this fall, a new internship and fellowship program at UNC will train students and graduates to lead North Carolina toward a greener future.

The program is part of the larger Developing Energy Leaders through Action (or DELTA) initiative.  UNC Environmental Finance Center Director Jeff Hughes says the program is actively committed to promoting energy efficiency and conservation.
 
The program is an effort led by the UNC Institute for the Environment along with other partners within the university and the surrounding community. It will be funded in part by a grant of more than $300,000 from the North Carolina Energy Office, along with a $4 increase in student fees.

UNC will give out more than 60 internships. Those selected will put green practices to work through applied research and direct assistance of groups ranging from UNC to Fortune 500 companies.

The program is designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels, but Hughes says there are no limits to the impact an intern can make. 

Hughes says he hopes the internships will not only support North Carolina’s movement to a greener economy, but also prepare students for the upcoming green workforce.
