Chapel Hill Woman Reports Attack and Robbery

Lieutenant Kevin Gunter of the Chapel Hill Police Department says a late night call for help led to the arrest of a convicted felon.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the assault. Thirty-three year old Zepplin Lee Hopper of Cameron, North Carolina, is currently being held in the Orange County Jail on a $101,000 dollar bond. Police say he faces several felony charges including first-degree burglary, assault by strangulation, and breaking and entering.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections web site, Hopper  is a convicted felon who served nearly two years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. He was released from Craven Correctional Institute in June of 2008.

An employee of the Kangaroo Express at 1501 E. Franklin St. is also facing felony charges. Lt. Gunter says police were contacted by the company’s loss prevention officer.

The suspect, Johnathan William Heumer, was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
