WCHL News DirectorAfter ten years of service, Carrboro’s El Centro Latino has shut its doors to the public.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce announced the closing on its Twitter page. Shortly after, El Centro Latino sent a press release confirming the news.
The non-profit’s Board of Directors last week decided to close shop after realizing that reduced grants, individual donations, leadership and staff transitions, as well as the economic recession had made it impossible to continue operating at its current capacity.
The Board says it’s not dissolving the organization. It plans to host a community-wide meeting in January to discuss its future and how to best meet the needs Orange County's Latino population. The details for that meeting will be announced at a later date.
For now, the Board says it is proud that El Centro has worked to improve the lives of thousands Latino immigrants in Orange County through programs such as employment assistance and English as a Second Language classes.
