Community Government ReporterEarly Wednesday morning OWASA, the Orange Water And Sewer Authority, responded to an overflow of untreated wastewater from a sewer manhole in Carrboro.
Greg Feller, public affairs director, says rain caused the overflow near Rosewalk Lane and Berryhill Drive.
The overflow was caused by stormwater entering into an OWASA sanitary sewer and was stopped at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The spill has been reported to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality which is currently reviewing the matter.
Feller says a fair amount of pollution has occurred due to the rain carrying the spill downstream but with no significant impact. Drinking water has not been affected.
Feller adds that storm drainage system is not under the OWASA umbrella.
On the upside, OWASA’s Planning Director Ed Holland says the rain will help fill area reservoirs, which have become depleted in recent months.
Also of note, members of the public are invited to share their feed back on OWASA’s Long-Range Water Supply Plan at a public meeting tonight at Town Hall at 7 p.m.
