WCHL News DirectorMichelle Brownstein garnered the most votes in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education election, finishing first with just over 27 percent of the votes.
During the campaign, Brownstein said her first priority will be to improve district accountability by requiring effective, research-based instructional practices needed to monitor student progress in order to reduce achievement gaps. The final count saw Greg McElveen elected to the seat he was appointed to this time last year, when Pam Hemminger was elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners. Only 366 votes separated Joe Green from MaryAnne Gucciardi, which saw him elected to the third open seat on the board.
No surprise to anyone paying attention that Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens would be re-elected as he ran unchallenged for a third term.
In the Town Commissioners race, Frances Dancy and Mike Gerring got to keep their seats for another term, garnering well over 200 votes each. Bryant Kelly Warren, Jr. finished last with 159 votes.
