The Chapel Hill Police Department had more to deal with than they anticipated on Halloween night.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran says he and his staff worked hard to make sure everyone who attended Saturday night’s festivities was safe.

Even though the majority of the night went without incident, EMS teams responded to several alcohol-related issues, as well as the the assault at Big Frat Court.  Police began moving patrons off the streets at around 12:20 a.m., and by 2 a.m., traffic was opened after the streets were cleaned by town crews. 

Chief Curran says downtown businesses and the University of North Carolina all helped to make the event as safe as possible. 

An estimated 50,000 people turned out, many dressed in costumes, for the celebration.
