Former Tar Heels Fill NFL Rosters

Over the years many former Tar Heel football players have made significant impacts in the NFL. This season is no different as the contributions from former Tar Heels can be seen from coast-to coast.

For the San Francisco 49ers, second year defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer saw significant action in the 45-10 loss to Atlanta, while Cornerback Dre Bly posted his 41st career interception in that same game. Long-time Cowboy turned Raider Greg Ellis posted two tackles as the Raiders fell to the New York Giants.

Speaking of the Giants, receiver Hakeem Nicks is proving to be a great addition to Coach Tom Coughlin’s team.  Nicks grabbed his second career touchdown pass on Sunday on his way to a 4 catch game for 49 yards.  Just down Highway-85 in Charlotte, former All-American Defensive End Julius Peppers assisted the Carolina Panthers in obtaining their first win of the season.  Peppers registered two sacks and three quarterback hurries in the win.  Alge Crumpler grabbed 3 balls for the Tennessee Titans in the 31-9 loss to Peyton Manning and the Colts Sunday Night.

The offensive line also sees a great deal of Tar Heel power across the NFL.  Guys like Madison Hedgecock, Jeff Saturday, and Jason Brown keep some of the most notable quarterbacks in the league protected.  Both Peyton and Eli Manning as well as Marc Bulger are protected by Tar Heel Alums.

Be on the look-out for your favorite former Tar Heels this week as over 20 former UNC greats take the field for week six.
