WCHL ReporterChancellor Holden Thorp addressed the UNC community on University Day, summing up the year that has passed and looking forward to the future. The address was different than previous years, as he gave the traditional State of the University speech on the Carolina’s Youtube channel.
Thorp says UNC has achieved great things in the past year.
Thorp highlighted some of UNC’s accomplishments over the past year, including the national championship in both men’s basketball and women’s soccer. He also applauded the opening of the first public cancer hospital in North Carolina, as well as the mapping of an entire HIV genome.
The challenges the chancellor referred to are, in part, the budget cuts made by UNC in response to the economic crisis. Thorp says the support from the state government helped Carolina make ends meet.
The budget cuts were focused on administration, sparing academics. Thorp says the research and academics at UNC will continue to provide opportunities to everyone.
