WCHL ReporterThe University of North Carolina has turned 216, and in observance, students, faculty and alumni will participate in next week’s University Day.
Ronald Strauss chair of University Day’s planning committee, says this is a chance for everyone to stop and observe the establishment of one of America’s top colleges.
Mark your calendars for next Monday and join the Tar Heel family for a series of events all dedicated to celebrating the University’s past and future. During University Day’s celebration ceremony, Governor Beverly Perdue will give the keynote speech. Perdue joins a long line of keynote speakers, including former Presidents John F. Kennedy in 1961 and Bill Clinton in 1993.
Also during University Day there will be a special dedication of the newly opened education center at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Expect distinguished alumni awards to be given out as well. Strauss adds that University Day brings together the Carolina family.
In honor of UNC 216th birthday, classes will also be cancelled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day of the event.
