WCHL News DirectorUNC’s Greek Judicial Board finds sanctions in the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity hearing.
In August, Chancellor Holden Thorp asked the Division of Student Affairs to review whether any University or fraternity policies were violated at a DKE party held the night before the death of chapter president Courtland Smith. Witnesses say Smith left the DKE party shortly after midnight appearing fine, and by 6 a.m. later that morning, he was pronounced dead after being shot by an Archdale police officer. The DKE party was said to be related to fraternity rush event.
The student-run Greek Judicial Board found the UNC DKE chapter to be in violation of Interfraternity Council Alcohol Free Recruitment Policy, Greek Alcohol Policy, Security Guard and Guest List Policy.
The chapter is being forwarded to the Standards & Review board for review of its chapter recognition with the university which should be completed by the end of October. The DKE house will also be on social probation. Among other consequences, the DKE house must spend its social budget for the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010 to sponsor and build the Courtland Benjamin Smith Memorial Habitat for Humanity House.
The news of the DKE fraternity sanctions comes on the heels of a speech given by Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp to a group of new fraternity members on hazing and substance abuse. The Daily Tar Heel reported that Crisp used the opportunity on Sunday to warn the university fraternities that his office would no longer tolerate destructive fraternity behavior. Crisp had been invited to speak Interfraternity Council President Charlie Winn.
