An Assistant Professor at UNC’s School of Medicine has been charged with death by motor vehicle after rear ending and ultimately killing a member of the Carolina ballet.

Raymond Dwight Cook, of Raleigh, has been charged with felonious death by motor vehicle, driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed and careless and reckless driving, after he crashed into the car of Elena Shapiro of the Carolina Ballet.

The accident took place Friday night around 8:30 p.m. when Cook’s Mercedes rear ended Shapiro’s Hyundai.

Reports say that Cook was driving about 90 mph on Strickland Road in Raleigh when he collided with Shapiro who was said to be driving about 20 mph. The speed limit was 45.

Shapiro, from Winston-Salem, later died at WakeMed where Cook was also transported for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Cook also works as a plastic surgeon at the same hospital.

Cook has been released from jail after posting a $50,000 secured bond.
