With less than two weeks to go before Carolina’s basketball season starts, UNC Student Body President Jasmin Jones wants to remind students and residents that starting celebratory bonfires can do more harm than good.

It took a tour of UNC’s Burn Center to make Student Body President Jasmin Jones take a stand against Franklin Street bonfires.

After Carolina’s men’s basketball team won the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship last April, eight students were taken to UNC’s Burn Center after the night’s celebrations. The crowd on Franklin Street was 45,000 strong with bonfires blazing along the main corridor of downtown Chapel Hill.

Her visit to the burn center initiated her to brainstorm alternative ways for students to celebrate after major events.

Jones says once students take the emotions behind Carolina victories out of the picture, they will see rationality behind the situation.
