Paul Frederick Sharp, who served as chancellor of UNC from 1964 to 1966 died Thursday at age 91. He was in Norman, Oklahoma at the time of his death.
Sharp called “the rediscovery of the student” the theme of his time at UNC. He helped the University face the challenges that came with a student body that grew to 20,000. He stressed academics, adding faculty to help meet the additional students’ needs.
During his time at UNC there was student unrest about a state law that forbade members of the Communist Party from speaking on any UNC campuses and several protests about the war in Vietnam.
He left UNC to take on the president post at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He also served as the president of the University of Oklahoma until 1978 when a stroke forced him to step down. He continued to serve as a professor of history at OU after the stroke.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church in Norman. Donations may be made to the Reach Out and Read Program through the University of Oklahoma Foundation.
