	OC Commisioners Eye Triad Transfer Station 02/13/09 11:35AM

Greensboro’s Director of Environmental Services Jeryl Covington tried to make herself heard over the noise.

Located in an industrial corridor neighboring I-40, Greensboro’s transfer station is built on a split level. Municipal garbage trucks drive to the upper deck and dump trash on the reinforced concrete floor. Earth moving equipment is used to push the garbage into a narrow trough that is open to the level below, where tractor trailers sit on scales receiving waste until they are full. The trailers are then covered, and the garbage is sent to the Uwharrie landfill.

Commissioners Steve Yuhasz, Pam Hemminger and Bernadette Pelissier were accompanied by Blair Pollock and Gayle Wilson of Orange County Solid Waste Management. Commissioner Pam Hemminger was impressed with what she saw.

Also in attendance were representatives of Preserve Rural Orange and Orange County Voice, groups opposed to the plan to build a waste transfer station in the rural Bingham Township. Bonnie Hauser believes Orange County should contract with Durham to accept waste as a short-term solution.
