Blogger Says Internet Libel Bill Will Not Work
02/05/09 02:51PM

The editor of a popular Orange County blog, OrangePolitics.org, says the Internet Libel bill that was introduced Tuesday in the state legislature is not likely to change the way bloggers function.

That’s Ruby Sinreich, the editor of OrangePolitics.org, a blog that offers an Internet home for progressive perspectives in Orange County
.

Senator Steve Goss says he was inspired to write the bill after reading about the conviction of a Missouri woman who assumed a false persona on the social networking community, Myspace, to cyberbully an acquaintance of her teenager daughter.

His aim, Goss says, is to bring internet users back to the “reality of truth” and not for the bill to be an assault on someone’s civil liberties.

Sinreich says for her own blog, she decided to filter those who choose to post their comments anonymously and does sometimes decide to decline their posts.

Currently the bill is written for Internet Libel to be a misdemeanor criminal offense, but Goss says that was an error, and his intention was to make the bill a civil case and not for the criminal courts.
