When WCHL spoke with UNC senior and Student Action with Workers organizer Salma Mirza, she had been essentially camping out in the lobby of South Building on UNC’s campus since Thursday morning of last week.
That sit-in, which includes several other students, is coinciding with other campus community members rallying outside on the steps of South Building where Chancellor James Moeser’s office is located, holding up signs that read “Adopt the DSP.”
The “DSP,” or Designated Suppliers Program, was created in 2005 as a way to enhance the enforcement of university codes of conduct, specifically in the manufacturing of licensed apparel advocating living wages and the ability to collectively bargain for workers.
Mirza said the program, which is still essentially a proposal, has not fared well at UNC.
But Chancellor Moeser has maintained the same position since August, that the proposal would not likely achieve what it’s meant to do and that it is still a concept, not a policy officially in operation.
Moeser met with Student Action with Workers organizers last Wednesday in a session facilitated by Student Body President JJ Raynor. The sit-in began the next morning.
Salma Mirza said she will not leave South Building until the Chancellor signs on to the DSP.
