William Thorpe Jr. says the fresh fruit kiosk program, founded in honor of his father, is now up and running.

He says many students return home from school without anything to eat.  Giving students a healthy option encourages healthy food choices for young people.

Thorpe says the pilot project at East Chapel Hill High is just the beginning. He hopes to have kiosks at all three area high schools in the near future.  The money for the pilot project comes from a charity golf tournament hosted by Thorpe in October.  No funds for the program come from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System. 

Thorpe says he hopes the program will help kids from being hungry, and promote healthy eating.
