The Governors Club’s Property Owners Association is under fire with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA for short.

The controversy comes after PETA received complaints over the association considering a bow hunt to kill area deer, says Tori Perry, senior cruelty case worker.

PETA posted an action alert on their Web site PETA.org. The alert draws national attention to the Chapel Hill neighborhood, and is aimed at the association’s board and deer committee members. PETA claims bow hunting is an ineffective long-term means of controlling deer population.

Although they cannot take legal action towards the board, the national organization hopes that drawing attention to their potential practice will influence the organization to not go the bow hunting route.

PETA sent a letter to the Governors Club Property Owners Association recommending enforcing ban on feeding wildlife, encourage residents to only plant native species, cover ornamental plants with netting or mesh, and install 10-foot-high deer fencing.
