Four cats must be surrendered to county officials for euthanasia after two bats found in Orange County have tested positive for rabies.

Bob Marotto, animal services director for Orange County says the only options for an unvaccinated animal are humane euthanasia or a six-month quarantine.

The positive tests on the bats are the 11th and 12th confirmed cases of rabies in Orange County this year.

There are two low-cost rabies clinics scheduled in Orange County next month.  The Government Service Annex in Hillsborough will host a clinic on September 24th.  The Orange County Animal Service Center in Chapel Hill will host their clinic on September 26th.

Marotto says bats are a known reservoir for rabies in Orange County.

There were 20 confirmed rabies cases in Orange County last year.
