Community Government ReporterBudget cuts may close a rural trash collection site, but residents of Western Orange County are determined to put up a fight.
Jim Morrissette, who uses the Bradshaw Quarry facility on a regular basis, addressed the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday.
The county operates five waste convenience centers to serve rural residents who are not eligible for trash pick-up. Hours at the other four collection sites will be reduced, but the Bradshaw Quarry location is slated to shut down September 20th.
Users of the Bradshaw Quarry site voiced concern that the closure will lead to an increase in trash burning and illegal dumping. They urged county commissioners to consider cutting hours at the site instead of closing it altogether.
County staff estimates the closing, coupled with other service reductions, could save nearly $120,000 this year and more than $140,000 by the end of 2011.
Interim County Manager Frank Clifton says the Bradshaw Quarry site is not equal to the county’s other facilities.
The board instructed staff to determine if the closure would be permanent or temporary, and explore other options for the site.
