A fundraiser will be held tomorrow to raise money for the local youth poetry team, The Sacrificial Poets. The money raised will allow them to attend the Brave New Voices International poetry competition in Chicago later this month.
Head poetry coach C.J. Suitt says the Sacrificial Poets provide a unique feel to poetry that you can’t find anywhere else.
The fundraiser will be held at the Mansion 462 on Franklin Street from 4-to-9 p.m. The Sacrificial Poets will recite original poetry commonly referred to as spoken word but also known as “slam” or “spitting” throughout the day. The ages of the group range from 13-to-20. They are the only youth poetry team in North Carolina.
If enough money is raised, the Chapel Hill based poetry team will compete in Chicago against teams from around the country. The competition includes four-rounds scored by 5-judges with the final round scheduled to be filmed for the HBO documentary series “Brave New Voices.”
Suitt says attendees are often surprised at what they are able to learn from high school aged poets.
The Brave New Voices poetry competition and festival starts July 14th. If you would like to hear the work of the Sacrificial poets, visit myspace.com/Sacrificial Poets.
