Thorp's Role Focuses On More Than Academics

When he became UNC’s Chancellor one year ago, Holden Thorp went from being an academic head to one of the faces of the university.

But the role of chancellor doesn’t just focus on academics.

The chief academic officer at the university is the provost, and Thorp feels the role of the chancellor is to not do the provost’s job for her. Current UNC Provost Bernadette Gray-Little is about to leave her post in order to become the chancellor at the University of Kansas. 

Thorp has also had to get used to being a public figure. While many chancellors tend to work rooms like their political figures, Thorp tends to be more introverted, like a true scientist.

In an effort to differentiate himself from other leaders, Thorp has tried to be more direct.

WCHL’s Jim Heavner spoke with Thorp about his first year in office. Part three of the interview can be heard today at 8:40 AM and 5:40 on WCHL.
