The United States Conference of Mayors has named Chapel Hill “Most Livable City” for its fare-free transit system and Monday Mayor Kevin Foy recognized the contribution of Chapel Hill Transit staff.

A panel of retired mayors selected Chapel Hill from over two-hundred cities across the country for the prestigious award.  

 Since the program’s inception in 2002 Chapel Hill Transit’s ridership has grown from three million riders a year to seven million riders projected for 2009. 

Mayor Foy says the benefits are worth the costs.

The award for “Most Livable City” was presented earlier this month.
