Varsity Theater Will Close
06/26/09 07:04AM

Owner Bruce Stone has confirmed to WCHL that the Varsity Theater will close, releasing the following written statement:

“Because of the sudden interest in the fate of the Varsity (and Chelsea) Theater, I thought it appropriate to offer a written explanation sufficient to address all the issues in the decisions relevant to this transition.

“This is a business decision, a bottom-line decision.  The numbers currently don’t support the continuation of both theaters as viable enterprises.  The Varsity especially has been struggling for over two years, with no prospect of an upturn any time soon.  Although the film exhibition business is a highly variable, feast or famine sort of business, the assumption has always been the feast and famines eventually even one another out.  However, there has been much more famine in recent years, with the summers being especially difficult..."

“...There are other, secondary reasons that might compromise the viability of downtown theaters in general and to the varsity in particular.  Many people claim they resist downtown because of traffic, and the expense and difficulty of parking.  Sad that this should be an obstacle, but many see free parking as a birthright.  And of course the excitement of a college town means football and basketball games with all the attendant traffic and congestion..."

"...We have been in the Varsity for nine challenging but enjoyable years.  Our landlord has been understanding and supportive throughout our tenure.  We of course regret this development but recognize that this change is entirely necessary.  We have nothing to add to the above statement, so we must decline any further requests for interviews, etc.  And we would like to thank our customers for their support and concern."
