Tar Heels Come Together To Give Life

The Dean Smith Center saw action today as the Tar Heels tried to reclaim their title.

Over 900 Tar Heels took to the floor of the Dean Dome to donate blood.  Appalachian State recently stole the title from UNC for the biggest single day blood drive in the state.

Katrina Coble, chair for the Carolina Blood Drive, said the event was running smoothly.

To beat Appalachian State and reclaim their title, the Carolina Blood Drive would have to collect 1,061 units of blood.  The event, co-sponsored by the American Red Cross, is in its 20th year.  Coble said that as of this morning there were 900 registered donors, and they are looking for as many walk-ins as possible to reach their goal of 1,100 units.

Bob Fechner, CEO of the American Red Cross Carolinas Region, and Coble shared their own personal motivation for donating blood.

Coble says walk-ins are encouraged and much needed.  If you would like to donate, walk-ins will be accepted until 6 p.m. tonight.
