When Australian native Jennifer Wellard had to undergo an operation at UNC, she was asked to have the operation broadcast over the Internet. She said yes.
UNC Doctor John Steege performed a laparoscopy, which essentially removes an ovary. The operation was videostreamed to 500 other doctors across the country, many of whom where unfamiliar with the process of that particular operation.
Techniques demonstrated included identification of the ureter, isolation of it from the blood supply of the ovary, safe dissection of the pelvic sidewall. Welland says she had no reservations about having it videostreamed if it’ll help other patients get the same kind of care she received.
Dr. Steege says it was an honor to be selected by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to simulcast the procedure to his peers, especially because surgery near the ureter often brings complications as it’s difficult to tell the exact amount of scaring before the operation.
In this case, everything went according to plan, and Wellard will be back at work as a computer programmer on Monday.
